Denise Bates , PhD., RRT, CHES

Denise R. Bates Ph.D., RRT, CHES received her Ph.D. in Health Studies in December, 2003 from Texas Woman’s University in Denton, Texas where she also completed her Master’s degree. She received her Bachelor’s of Science degree from Louisiana State University Medical Center in Shreveport, Louisiana.

Dr. Bates has taught several courses in health education, behavior, community, and public health. Her primary teaching interests include women’s health issues, health policy/advocacy, global health, psychosocial health, and community program assessment, planning, and evaluation. In addition to her experience teaching in the classroom, Dr. Bates has worked with community and health organizations for many years in strategic planning, mediation/conflict resolution, cultural diversity training, and grant writing.

Dr. Bates centers her research around health care and education access for under-served people in the nation. Her work over the last 14 years has been predominately with refugees and immigrants, studying assimilation to dominate culture and the related and resulting health risks experienced by these groups of people, particularly in youth. Most of her work has been in community capacity building, community based research, health policy and developing social networks for community success.

Principle Investigator, Texas Statewide Coordinated Statement of Need (SCSN) Project Grant.  Funded by the Texas Department of Health for $185,000. (2004-2006)
