Dr. Susan Smith

Susan M. Smith Ed. D., MSPH is an Associate Professor within ITHCS. Dr. Smith received her Ed. D in Health Education with specializations in Safety and Public Health from The University of Tennessee in 1989; an M.S.P.H. from the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering, The University of North Carolina School of Public Health in 1975 and a B.S. with a double major in Biology and Chemistry from Berry College Rome Ga. in 1973.

Dr. Smith has served as the coordinator of the UT Graduate Safety Program for the past 10 years and as part of the graduate faculty since 1996. Dr. Smith is also Director of the UT Safety Center at the University of Tennessee. She was awarded the 2004 Distinguished Service Award to Safety, the highest award given by the National Safety Council for her outstanding work in the areas of safety education, research and service.

Dr. Smith’s commitment to quality professional development in the areas of Safety and Public Health and service learning strongly supports the University’s mission of teaching, research and service in the area of safety and health protection. Dr. Smith teaches graduate courses in injury prevention, emergency management and environmental health. Reducing injury risk for special high-risk populations including child fatality reduction, safety of adolescents in the workplace, and improved emergency and evacuation of special populations during a disaster is her important research focus. Dr. Smith’s professional service has included serving as an active elected Board Member represented North America for the International Emergency Management Society and as a member of the Board of Delegates for the National Safety Council.
